Black lawmakers forgive Rokita-Indy Star
The Indiana Black Legislative Caucus said that after meeting with Secretary of State Todd Rokita today, its members accept his apology for comments Rokita made last week comparing black support for Democrats to a master-slave relationship.
"It's over for us," said Rep. Vernon Smith, D-Gary, leader of the group, adding that there are more important issues "than a slip of the lip."
Rokita met this morning for about a half-hour with the caucus, which includes 12 black legislators, all Democrats. He had issued a statement apologizing for his remarks on Monday, and on Tuesday went on two local radio stations with largely black audiences to also apologize.
Black legislators had been critical of Rokita's written apology, which had said he apologized "if I offended anyone."
This morning, Smith said, Rokita gave a full apology, with no "ifs" attached.
"He apologized to our satisfaction. We do believe he was sincere in his apology," Smith said.
