First batches of deadly nerve agent destroyed

First batches of deadly nerve agent destroyed

Associated Press

NEWPORT, Ind. — An Army contractor destroyed the first batches of a deadly nerve agent stored in western Indiana after workers fine-tuning the process adjusted the speed at which the liquid was fed into two chemical reactors.

A preliminary analysis showed that 180 gallons of VX nerve agent were successfully neutralized Friday inside the reactors at the Newport Chemical Agent Disposal Facility, said Col. Jesse Barber, the project manager."

It's about time they destroyed that stuff.

US defence budget will equal ROW combined "within 12 months"

US defence budget will equal ROW combined 'within 12 months'

By Guy Anderson Editor of Jane's Defence Industry

Defence expenditure in the US will equal that of the rest of the world combined within 12 months, making it 'increasingly pressing' for European contractors to develop a 'closer association' with the US, corporate finance group PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) says.

Its report - 'The Defence Industry in the 21st Century' by PwC's global aerospace and defence leader Richard Hooke - adds that 'the US is in the driving seat', raising the prospect of a future scenario in which it could 'dominate the supply of the world's arms completely'. "

Lawmakers promise troops in Iraq new IED jammers, other gear

By Leo Shane III, Stars and Stripes
Mideast edition, Friday, May 6, 2005

WASHINGTON — Members of Congress promised Thursday that troops in Iraq will get new IED jammers within 60 days and better gun truck kits in the coming months, and started research on ballistic glass shields that can be easily installed on Humvees.

The equipment promises came as the House Armed Services Committee continued its yearlong review of the improvised explosive device problem in Iraq.

Army and Marine officials testified that the services had underestimated how dangerous roadside bombs would be, but said they are confident military technology has now caught up with the problem."

I'll wait and see if this comes to past, I sure hope so.

Daily Kos :: It Begins: Dems "Excommunicated" From Church? [updated w/ VIDEO]

by georgia10

Thu May 5th, 2005 at 18:12:18 PDT

For those that thought that there has not been a full scale war lanched against liberals; for those who didn't take the radical right's promise to 'eradicate liberals' seriously, I present to you, Exhibit A: East Waynesville Baptist Church has just kicked out all its Democratic members.

Yes. You read that right. If you didn't vote for Bush, you had to 'repent your sin'. And finally, they figured why deal with the liberal sinners at all..

From libnnc over at DU:

'One of the local women who got excommunicated said on TV that it was like a cult. Another man who got excommunicated said that the rest of the congregation stood up and applauded as the Democrats were told to leave.'
The news report has been confirmed by others on that thread. The broadcast @ 11 pm on WLOS will run the story again. "

And From WLOS:

Religion and Politics Clash
Religion and politics clash over a local church's declaration that Democrats are not welcome.

East Waynesville Baptist asked nine members to leave. Now 40 more have left the church in protest. Former members say Pastor Chan Chandler gave them the ultimatum, saying if they didn't support George Bush, they should resign or repent. The minister declined an interview with News 13. But he did say "the actions were not politically motivated." There are questions about whether the bi-laws were followed when the members were thrown out.

Just what is this minister thinking. Must not have any brains, because this will touch off us Democrats. Wing-nuts got to get it through their thick skulls, that we (democrats) believe in God also. I'll have more of my thoughts later.

U.S. says 60 rebels dead in Afghan clashes

By Sayed Salahuddin

KABUL (Reuters) - Taliban rebels have suffered heavy losses after launching attacks in southern Afghanistan with the U.S. military saying Thursday about 60 insurgents have been killed in two battles in recent days.

In the latest clash, Taliban insurgents ambushed a patrol in Kandahar province killing nine government soldiers in the heaviest loss for the new national army in a single incident, the Defense Ministry said.

After the ambush Wednesday, aircraft from Afghanistan's U.S.-led international force attacked the rebels, a U.S. military spokeswoman said.

'The initial report is that 20 insurgents were killed,' said Lieutenant Cindy Moore.

In an earlier battle, in neighboring Zabul province on Tuesday, 40 militants were killed in a clash with U.S. and Afghan forces, the U.S. military said"

Its hard to fight a war in Afghanistan, when a large portion of the military resources are in in Iraq.

US Marines land on Somali coast to hunt militants

Back to Somolia? Is this a probe by the Marines? Or this connected to the capture of the number 3 man in Pakistan earlier this week?

International News Article | Reuters.com: "By Hussein Ali Nur

HARGEISA, Somalia (Reuters) - U.S. Marines landed on Somalia's coast in one of their most visible hunts for militants in the country since they set up a Horn of Africa counter terrorism force in 2002, Somali officials said on Thursday.

Two boats brought about 20 lightly armed Marines to the fishing village of Maydh in the northwestern enclave of Somaliland on Tuesday, where they showed pictures of suspected 'terrorists' to locals before leaving, residents said.

'They met some of the fishermen and the people and they showed some pictures they were carrying, saying that these people are terrorists that they are trying to capture,' Assistant District Commissioner Ali Abdi told Reuters.

It was not clear who the Marines were looking for."

Marine Raid Breaks Gender Barrier

"In a first in Iraq, 14 female Marines from Combat Logistics Battalion 8 were called away from their usual jobs of supplying ammunition, food, water, fuel and mail to operate alongside infantry Marines of the 3d Battalion, Eighth Marine Regiment for a three-day offensive in the city of Karmah.

Cultural sensitivities precluded male Marines from searching women, so the female Marines were meant to deflate fears of Iraqi men and women, said the battalion executive officer, Major Larry Miller. "
