Gay couples from around Italy were informally married in symbolic ceremonies in central Rome on Saturday, expressing their frustration at Italy's strict laws which offer no legal recognition to same-sex couples. Italy's gay and lesbian associations are lobbying for parliament to give gay couples legal status and equal rights as traditional marriages in areas such as pensions and taxes.
