Two US Marines killed in Iraqi insurgent stronghold

BAGHDAD, Sept 4 (Reuters) - Two U.S. Marines were killed in action on Sunday in Iraq's Anbar province, the U.S. military said in a statement on Monday.

Anbar is where the three-year-old Sunni insurgency against the U.S. occupation and the Shi'ite-led government of Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki is worst and where the U.S. military suffers most of its casualties.

"Two Marines assigned to Regimental Combat Team 5 died yesterday due to enemy action while operating in al Anbar Province," the statement said.
